The Geiger

The Geiger is a low cost Geiger counter without an LCD display or meter, but with a data port, designed especially for monitoring radiation through a computer or data logger, where the computer screen serves as the visual display of radiation count data, or where no visual display is needed at all - rather, just the data port feature.  This makes the Geiger an excellent instrument to use with the GeigerGraph software, or in the classroom or the field in educational data collection.

The Geiger detects Beta (good Beta sensitivity), Gamma, and X-radiation.  It is small, lightweight, and portable.  The special glass Geiger-Mueller detector tube is visible through the translucent Lexan label on the rear panel. It fluoresces or lights up when exposed to radiation, especially viewable in a dark room.  See photo at right.

The Data Port, located on the side of the instrument, is a dual miniature jack which accepts a 3.5mm stereo plug, and produces a positive 5 volt pulse each time the Geiger counter detects a radiation count.  The optional Data Cable, which can be purchased separately, is 6 feet long, with the 3.5mm stereo plug on one end, while the opposite end is a 9 pin RS-232 connector for an IBM PC compatible serial port.
